PDF Redaction Studio Desktop Is Now Available for macOS

The last gap in the Studio Desktop rollout is closed: PDF Redaction Studio Desktop now runs natively on macOS, on Apple Silicon. Windows had it via the Microsoft Store, Linux had it via Snap, and Mac users were stuck with the browser tool or nothing. As of this release, every major desktop OS has a native build.

What the app actually does

Studio Desktop isn't a wrapper around the website — it's the same redaction engine packaged as a standalone app, with everything that implies for how documents get handled:

  • Names, addresses, emails, phone numbers, ID numbers, credit card numbers and faces are flagged automatically by the AI detection model
  • OCR, PII/NER detection and face detection all run on-device by default, so a document doesn't need to leave your Mac just to get scanned
  • Nothing changes in the file until you review and confirm the matches — add what got missed, clear out false positives, filter by category
  • Export actually deletes the matched content — text, embedded objects, image regions — from the output PDF, rather than drawing a rectangle over it
  • Finder integration: right-click any PDF, choose Open With → Pdf Redaction Studio, and it opens straight into the editor

Getting it running

The build lives on the download page as two options:

  1. Pdf.Redaction.Studio.dmg — mount the disk image, drag Pdf Redaction Studio into Applications
  2. Pdf.Redaction.Studio-darwin-arm64.zip — a portable build you can unzip and run from anywhere

It needs Apple Silicon (M1 or newer — there's no Intel/Rosetta build at this point) and macOS 11 Big Sur or later. The app has no auto-updater yet, so new versions have to be re-downloaded manually from the download page.

Working around Gatekeeper

This build hasn't gone through Apple notarization yet, which means macOS Gatekeeper will block the first launch with a "can't be opened" or "is damaged" message — that's expected, not a corrupted download. Clear it once from Terminal:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Pdf Redaction Studio.app"

(Swap the path if the app isn't in /Applications.) If you'd rather skip Terminal, open the app once anyway, then go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and approve it with Open Anyway. Step-by-step details are in the Studio Desktop documentation.

Why have a desktop app when there's already a web tool

Good question, since pdf-redaction.com already redacts PDFs entirely client-side in the browser — that covers a single document just fine. The desktop build is aimed at a different use case: people who redact documents routinely as part of their job. Legal teams processing discovery, HR handling personnel files, healthcare and support staff clearing PII out of forms — they wanted something that behaves like a real application (a persistent dashboard, document and usage tracking, no tab to accidentally close) with local processing guaranteed by default rather than configured.

FAQ

Does Studio Desktop work on Intel Macs? Not yet. The current build only runs on Apple Silicon (M1 and later). An Intel build isn't ruled out, but it isn't scheduled either.

Why does macOS say the app "can't be opened"? The build isn't notarized by Apple yet, so Gatekeeper blocks it by default on first launch. Run the xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine command above, or approve it under System Settings → Privacy & Security.

Does the macOS app auto-update? No. Check the download page periodically and re-download when a new version ships.

Is my document uploaded anywhere? No, not by default. OCR, PII detection and face detection all run locally on the Mac.

What's coming next

Apple notarization for the macOS build and an Intel-compatible build are both on the roadmap — we'll post an update once either ships. In the meantime, full setup and usage instructions live at pdf-redaction.com/docs/studio-desktop.
