How to Check If a PDF Is Properly Redacted

A redacted PDF is only safe if the hidden information is gone from the file, not just covered. You can check in under a minute: try to select or search for the redacted text, then run the document through a free redaction checker that inspects the text layer, hidden layers and metadata. If any test finds the data, the redaction failed and the file must be redacted again before you send it.

Why redactions fail

Most failed redactions come from tools that only change what you see. A rectangle drawn in a PDF viewer, a shape added in Word, a black highlighter mark or a blurred screenshot all leave the original text in the file. The document looks redacted, but the content can be selected, searched, copied or extracted with a one-line script. High-profile examples appear every year in court filings and government releases; the fix is always the same: delete the content, flatten the page and strip the metadata.

Steps

   Try to select the redacted text

   Open the PDF in any viewer and press Ctrl+A (Cmd+A on Mac), or drag across a black box. If the box turns blue or you can copy text from it, the content is still in the file and the redaction has failed.

   Search the document

   Press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F) and search for a word you redacted, such as a surname or the first digits of an account number. A hit means the text layer still contains the data even if it is hidden.

   Upload the PDF to the redaction checker

   Open the free checker and drop the file in. It inspects the text layer, hidden layers, annotations and metadata locally in your browser and shows anything that can still be recovered under the redaction marks.

   Check the document properties

   Look at File → Properties (or Document Properties). Author, title, subject, keywords and the edit history are often left behind and may reveal names or the original filename.

   Fix and re-export

   If any test fails, re-open the original in PDF Redaction, apply the redactions there and download the flattened, metadata-free result. Then run the tests once more.

What the checker looks at

• Text layer: any text run that intersects a redaction mark.
• Annotations and shapes: rectangles, highlights and stamps that sit above the page instead of replacing it.
• Hidden layers: optional content groups that can be toggled back on.
• Images: whether the pixels under a box were removed or merely covered.
• Metadata: author, title, subject, keywords, creation tool, and XMP history.
• Attachments and bookmarks that reference removed content.

If the test fails

1. Go back to the original document, not the failed redaction.
2. Redact it with a tool that deletes content: the free PDF Redaction tool, Acrobat Pro's Redact tool with Sanitize Document, or another editor that flattens pages.
3. Download the result and run the tests in this guide again.
4. Keep the failed file out of shared folders and email threads; it contains everything you meant to remove.
