How to Redact a PDF Without Adobe Acrobat
You do not need Adobe Acrobat Pro to redact a PDF. A free browser tool can find personal data automatically and delete it from the file; a free desktop app does the same offline on Windows and Linux; macOS Preview has a basic Redact tool; and several free online editors and open-source libraries remove text if you mark it yourself. The free Acrobat Reader is the one option that cannot redact at all.
This guide covers the five alternatives, the steps for the recommended one, and the traps that make a "redacted" file recoverable.
Why look beyond Acrobat?
Acrobat Pro's redaction works, but it is a manual tool behind a subscription. Its pattern search covers a handful of US formats (SSN, phone, credit card, dates); names, addresses, medical terms and non-US identifiers must be found by reading. If you redact occasionally, or you need to process long documents reliably, an AI-based tool is faster and less error-prone, and it costs nothing for documents up to 25 pages. See the full Adobe Acrobat alternative comparison for pricing and features.
Method 1: free AI redaction in the browser (recommended)
Steps
Open PDF Redaction in your browser
No installation and no Adobe licence are needed. The tool runs in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge on Windows, macOS, Linux and mobile devices.
Upload the PDF
Drag and drop the file or click Upload. Processing happens in your browser; the document is not stored on a server.

Review the automatic detections
The AI highlights personal data such as names, addresses, dates, phone numbers, email addresses and ID numbers, something Acrobat can only do for a few US number patterns.

Add manual redactions
Search for a word to redact every occurrence, draw boxes with the rectangle tool, or switch off data categories you want to keep.

Download and verify
Download the redacted file. The content is deleted and metadata is stripped. Open it in the free redaction checker to confirm the result before sending.

Free for up to 25 pages per document. No licence, no account.
Method 2: free desktop app (Windows and Linux)
PDF Redaction Studio Desktop installs from the Microsoft Store or as a Snap package on Linux. It runs the AI detection, OCR and face detection locally with no internet connection, which suits legal, medical and government users who cannot use web tools. The free tier is the same as online. A macOS build is in progress; until then Mac users can use the browser tool.
Method 3: macOS Preview
On macOS 11 Big Sur or later, open the PDF in Preview and choose Tools → Redact. Drag over text to remove it, then save. Preview warns that the change is permanent, and it does remove the text. Three limits: there is no automatic detection, scanned pages cannot be searched because Preview has no OCR, and document metadata is not cleaned. Preview's older Rectangle and Highlight tools are annotations, not redactions. See How to redact a PDF on Mac.
Method 4: free online PDF editors
Smallpdf, Xodo, PDF24 and iLovePDF offer a redact function with free-tier limits. They do remove text under a redaction mark. They are manual, so you must locate every occurrence yourself, and some upload the file to their servers for processing. Check the privacy policy before using them with confidential material, and run the output through a redaction checker.
Method 5: open-source and command-line tools
Developers can apply true redactions with libraries such as PyMuPDF (page.add_redact_annot() followed by page.apply_redactions()), or with the PDF Redaction API if they want detection included. Command-line tools give full control but no detection, OCR or metadata clean-up unless you add them.
What not to do
- Word, Google Docs or PowerPoint shapes: the text is exported underneath.
- Black highlighter in a viewer: the text remains selectable.
- Changing the font colour: still searchable.
- Cropping or blurring a screenshot: the original file still exists, and blur can often be reversed.
Check that your redaction actually worked
Before you send a redacted PDF anywhere, open it in our free checker to confirm no hidden text, layers or metadata can be recovered.
Quick summary
- Open the free PDF Redaction tool in any browser.
- Upload the PDF and let the AI highlight sensitive data.
- Adjust the boxes; use search to catch every occurrence.
- Download the flattened, metadata-free file.
- Verify it before sharing.
Frequently Asked Questions

For most people a browser-based AI tool such as PDF Redaction, because it finds the sensitive data for you and removes it permanently without a licence. For offline work, the free Studio Desktop app for Windows and Linux.
Can I redact a PDF in Microsoft Word?
Not safely. Word has no redaction tool. Drawing black shapes and exporting to PDF leaves the original text underneath. Convert the document to PDF first and redact the PDF.
Does macOS Preview redact PDFs?
Preview on macOS Big Sur and later has a Redact tool under Tools that removes text. The older rectangle and highlight tools do not. Preview has no automatic detection, no OCR and no metadata clean-up.
Can Chrome or Edge redact a PDF?
The built-in browser PDF viewers can annotate but not redact. Use a web-based redaction tool inside the browser instead.

Yes, for technical users. Libraries such as PyMuPDF can apply true redactions with a few lines of Python, but you must locate every item yourself and handle OCR and metadata separately.
