Method 1: free AI redaction in Safari or Chrome (recommended)
Steps
Open PDF Redaction in Safari or Chrome
Nothing to install. The tool runs in the browser on any Mac, Intel or Apple silicon, and works the same on iPad.
Drop the PDF from Finder
Drag the file from Finder into the upload area, or click Upload. The document is processed on your Mac in the browser and is not stored on a server.
Review the AI highlights
Names, addresses, dates, phone numbers, email addresses and ID numbers are highlighted on every page. Scanned pages are read with OCR automatically, which Preview cannot do.
Adjust with search and manual boxes
Search for a word to redact every occurrence, or click and drag to draw boxes. Use Cmd+Z to undo.
Download and verify
Download the redacted file to your Mac. The text and pixels are deleted and metadata cleared. Open it in the redaction checker, then in Preview press Cmd+A to confirm nothing under the boxes is selectable.

Method 2: macOS Preview
- Open the PDF in Preview (macOS 11 Big Sur or later).
- Choose Tools → Redact. Preview shows a warning that redaction is permanent.
- Drag over the text or area to remove. The selection turns into a black box.
- File → Save (or duplicate first to keep the original). The text is deleted from the file.
- Check Tools → Show Inspector for leftover metadata such as author and title; Preview does not remove it.
Limits: no automatic detection, no search-and-redact, no OCR for scanned pages. On macOS Catalina or earlier there is no Redact tool at all.
The Preview mistake to avoid: the black Rectangle shape from the Markup toolbar looks like a redaction but is an annotation. The text stays underneath and can be revealed by deleting the shape.
Method 3: Adobe Acrobat Pro for Mac

What about Pages, Numbers and Keynote?
Apple's iWork apps have no redaction. If a document originates in Pages, export it to PDF first and redact the PDF; drawing shapes in Pages and exporting keeps the text underneath.
